British hard rock legends DEEP PURPLE have shared a new single, "Guilt Trippin'" — just days ahead of the worldwide release of their highly anticipated new studio album "Splat!" on July 3 via earMUSIC.
What begins with a deceptively gentle piano intro soon bursts into one of "Splat!"'s most unpredictable and exhilarating moments — and one of Ian Gillan's most memorable vocal performances on the album.
Gillan on recording "Guilt Trippin'": "The song starts, and I'm in the studio. I don't have any words for it yet. So I just start screaming. It was the pure joy of yelling it. I vowed when I was 40 that I'd stop screaming by the time I was 60. Now I'm looking back and thinking, 'Whatever happened to that?' So we'll give it a go."
Behind the music lies another one of "Splat!"'s wonderfully bizarre stories. "Guilt Trippin'" imagines God and Charles Darwin sharing a drink in a pub, reflecting on how things on earth have not exactly worked out according to plan.
The accompanying video follows a fly and a sycamore-seed spaceship on a wild ride through the increasingly absurd and dreamlike world of "Splat!".
Collectors can look forward to a special physical release. "Guilt Trippin'" is now available for pre-order on limited CD and limited 12-inch vinyl (silver and blue splatter),featuring previously unreleased live recordings of "Portable Door" and "Anya", captured during DEEP PURPLE's 2024 tour in support of their chart-topping album "=1".
DEEP PURPLE is currently on a major run of European summer dates before the "Splat!" world tour heads to North America. Tickets are available via DEEP PURPLE's official web site.
"Splat!" has already received enthusiastic first fan and media reactions, with early press praising the album's DEEP PURPLE spirit. Uncut calls "Splat!" "distilled, high-octane PURPLE at its finest". Classic Rock praises the album for delivering "everything that makes DEEP PURPLE one of the greatest acts in hard rock."
With more than 120 million albums sold since forming in 1968, DEEP PURPLE have long secured their place in rock history. Rather than simply preserving their legacy, they continue to extend it, driven by the same spirit that defined their earliest work.
Says Gillan: "Where we are now with this incarnation of DEEP PURPLE feels very much like a very 'now' version of DEEP PURPLE as it was in the '70s."
Once again, the band has teamed up with renowned producer Bob Ezrin (KISS, PINK FLOYD, Lou Reed, Alice Cooper). Together, they have crafted an album that draws on the sound and attitude that has always set DEEP PURPLE apart from the rest.
"Splat!" is the heaviest DEEP PURPLE album in many years, with the band playing together in the studio — the way DEEP PURPLE have always recorded.
Gillan comments: "I have to say, now we are very much back in with material that is compatible with 'Highway Star', 'Smoke On The Water', 'Lazy' — the dynamics, the balance, and the fun of the music we made from '69 to '73."
At the heart of "Splat!" is an idea conceived by Gillan. Rather than treating the end as destruction, the album imagines it as transformation: "Splat!" explores the end of humanity not in any crude apocalyptic sense but as a metamorphosis beyond physical existence.
