John Thomas “Jontho” Bratland, frontman of Norwegian black metal band Ragnarok, passed away on on Sunday (December 21) at the age of 48.
Jontho was originally Ragnarok‘s drummer, but later became the band’s vocalist. He also worked with a number of other acts – including Endezzma, The Shining Woe, Perdition Hearse, Kharon, Excelsis, Shadow Dancers, and Thoth – and performed on Tsjuder’s 2002 album, Demonic Possession.
Mork mastermind, Thomas Eriksen, took to social media to pay tribute to his friend, writing, “R.I.P Jontho. Had many great and fun times with him over the years. I was even asked to fill in on bass for Ragnarok for one show a decade ago. Sad to hear about the passing of a fellow Østfolding.”
Organizers of the Midgardsblot festival shared, “RIP Jontho. We are deeply saddened to hear about the passing John Thomas Bratland Jontho of Ragnarok. A true presence, and a part of the Norwegian black metal legacy. Our thoughts are with his family, friends, bandmates, and everyone affected by this loss. RIP.”
