Helix fans should be rejoicing as the Canadian hard rockers are working on the release of a live album based on a recording of a show at Harpos in Detroit, Michigan, USA back in 1984. Helix have apparently released only a few live records consisting of Live At The Marquee (1985), half-ALIVE (1998) and Live! In Buffalo (2001) in their almost 50 year history. The EP Live At The Marquee only has six live tracks. The album half-ALIVE consists of five studio songs and a selection of eleven live tracks. Interestingly, Live! In Buffalo contains 13 live tracks from recordings dating back to 1983.
The following message was posted on Helix‘s Facebook page yesterday:
“Wow! Busier than a lint picker in a naval factory. She-e-e-esh! Been trying to get a live album together that was recorded at HARPOS in Detroit in 1984. Lee Arnold was the program director at the time I believe…Doug Podell was second in charge.
The Walking the Razor’s Edge album celebrates it’s 40th anniversary next year, as well as HELIX celebrating it’s 50th. The live album from HARPOS, broadcast on WLLZ has some smokin tracks: Young & Wreckless, You Keep Me Rockin’, Gimme Gimme Good Lovin’, Rock You, Dirty Dog, Never Wanna Lose You, My Kind of Rock & Animal House. I’m thinking of releasing this on my own label (HELIX RECORDS) on colored vinyl. Right now I have Seigfried Meier listening to the tracks and seeing if he can “tweak” them a bit, although, for the most part, the recording is just fine the way it is. The most glaring thing that needs to be fixed are the double leads in Young & Wreckess-the first song. When walking to the stage that night, Paul banged his guitar on something, so…
My thoughts are, “If they can lift John Lennon‘s voice from a shitty cassette tape and make it sound like a million dollars, then they can fix the double leads in Y&W. LOL. I’m also going to cut a few songs off the album, as you should never run more than 5 songs a side on vinyl. Maybe we can make the extra tracks be bonus tracks on the CD. Just a thought…
Jay Panaseiko of Studio 73 Digital Media has been helping out with all this stuff including the ROCK YOU and HEAVY METAL LOVE figurine. Most of the time with those two merchandise items was in finding a distributor to sell us the recording devices that fit inside for a decent price. Now that we’ve gotten over that hurdle, (we bought 100 of the devices) we just have to design the pod that will hold them on the base. Initially I was going to paint them but there was such a demand and it took such a long time to do each one that I figure I might as well sell them unpainted as well. So…the painted ones (by me) will be $199.00 + shipping. The “unpainted” ones will be $100.00. When we finally finish them, will post a video of each on my Facebook page.”
